Rapid advancements in autonomous and connected vehicle technology promise to disrupt and transform the automotive space. A key feature of autonomous vehicles is V2X (vehicle-to-everything) communication, their need to communicate with other vehicles and also with their surroundings. To have reliable and efficient communications, technologies need to be compliant with standards, making standard-essential patents ("SEP") and the licensing term of them particularly important. This program will discuss SEPs relating to autonomous vehicles, the licensing of SEPs on "fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory" (FRAND) terms, and the role of patent pools. Due to the incorporation of new technologies into the automotive platform and the innovation coming from other technology companies, the program will also discuss the rising in patenting and the trend of patent litigation in the automotive industry.
