The mix of energy production in the United States has varied over the years. Now, as it becomes increasingly clear that nations must act to battle climate change, several questions arise: what will the future of energy production in the US, one of the worlds largest emitters of greenhouse gases and other pollutants, look like? As the US moves to decarbonize its energy production, does nuclear energy have a role to play in that future? Are commercial nuclear power plants an environmentally and economically viable option to decarbonize the US energy system? This panel, featuring four speakers prominent in the nuclear sector, will engage in a lively discussion to begin answering these questions. Topics will include an overview of current energy production in the US; advanced (new) nuclear reactors, their development, and their role with respect to public health and safety concerns; the NRC rulemaking creating a new process for licensing advanced reactors under what may become the proposed Part 53 to Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations; and the pros and cons of relying on nuclear energy in the future as a mechanism for battling climate change and achieving grid decarbonization.
