To do justice is to advocate with courage for accountability under the law. This program addresses the importance of a diverse bar for effective advocacy, particularly in legal matters that have disproportionately affected underrepresented communities. The panelists will discuss vivid examples of the difference diversity among advocates can make for lasting change, setting a watershed case as a backdrop. In Contempt of Court: The Turn-of-the-Century Lynching that Launched a Hundred Years of Federalism , we meet heroes who charted our nation's path to civil rights enforcement as they worked to do justice for Ed Johnson, an African American wrongfully convicted of rape. Tragically, Mr. Johnson was lynched while his case was under federal review. Sheriff Joseph Shipp, who abetted the lynching, was convicted of contempt of the U.S. Supreme Court by the justices themselves. Author Mark Curriden will introduce the Johnson and Shipp trials, and the panelists will consider themes from those trials that continue to emphasize the importance of advocacy in advancing equal protection under the law. The trials are touchstones for contemporary matters: the importance of ethical standards for judges and lawyers in promoting public confidence in the rule of law, the obstacles and long road to achieving diversity in the legal profession, and the evolving role of the federal judiciary in protecting the basic civil rights of criminal defendants in state proceedings.
