Communities are not equally impacted by climate change or by mitigation strategies designed to reduce emissions. Climate justice efforts are aimed at addressing marginalized communities' heightened vulnerability to the potentially devastating consequences of a changing climate. Moreover, environmental and energy justice principles focus on equitably distributing the benefits and burdens of climate mitigation policies and on equal access to the decision-making process. Panelists will cover the intersection between environmental justice and climate change policy; tribal renewable energy and natural resource project development, tribal economic development, and the water-energy nexus; and the Biden administration's efforts to tackle the climate crisis, to deliver environmental justice, and to address environmental review under NEPA.
Panelists:
Bidtah Becker, Associate Attorney, Navajo Tribal Utility Authority, Fort Defiance, AZ
KK Duvivier (Moderator), Professor; John A. Carver Chair in Natural Resources Law, University of Denver Sturm College of Law, Denver, CO
Alice Kaswan, Professor; Associate Dean for Faculty Scholarship, University of San Francisco School of Law, San Francisco, CA
Justin Pidot, General Counsel, White House Council on Environmental Quality, Washington, DC
