Numerous studies have pointed to carbon removal as essential to deep decarbonization goals, such as goals of the Paris Agreement on climate change and the Biden Administration. This panel will explore two key approaches to removing carbon: carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) and nature-based solutions such as enhanced forests and soil carbon sequestration. The panel will include a focus on western issues such as CCUS implications for the western U.S., and wildfire and other permanence implications for forest carbon credits. The event will also look at incentives for CCS and nature-based project deployment, including CCUS tax credits under section 45Q and carbon credit generation issues under the California cap and trade program, the California low carbon fuel standard, and other related programs. The panel will assess lessons learned and implications for decarbonization and future projects.
