The Evolving UK Data Protection Position Post-Brexit: Will the UK Position Itself Mid-Atlantically?
At the end of February 2021, the UK Government Minister for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport wrote in the national press that now that the UK has left the European Union "we have the freedom to strike our own international data partnerships with some of the world’s fastest growing economies. There is a huge prize to be won here ... The EU has been slow to act on this, declaring only 12 countries "adequate" in the past few decades. By being more agile, the UK can capitalise on a multibillion-pound opportunity to boost trade in sectors where physical distance is no object. I will shortly announce our priority countries for data adequacy agreements." As the UK transitions to a less EU-centric international trade position this talk considers where the UK may ultimately be positioned, or at least the direction of travel in the data protection space: will the UK adopt a more North American outlook?

A Primer on Privacy and Data Protection Law and Regulatory Developments in APAC
Prompted by the power of big tech, GDPR, data breaches and COVID the past year has seen significant developments across the APAC region. This talk will analyze major developments and drivers of data protection laws in the region, including the current major review of Australia’s Privacy Act being undertaken and New Zealand's Privacy Act 2020, which updates its privacy legislation and remains one of the few non-European countries that has 'adequacy status'. Susan will also provide a general APAC roundup including status updates on India’s delayed Personal Data Protection Bill, Indonesia’s proposed Law on the Protection of Personal Data and Sri Lanka's draft Protection Bill.

A Primer on Privacy and Data Protection Law and Regulatory Developments in China, Hong Kong and Singapore
Recent years have seen Asia emerge as the region of the world with the most intensive activity in law- and rule-making in the area of data protection and data flows. Regulatory enforcement powers and networks are being reinforced, with EU GDPR serving as a shared reference. Yet behind a facade of apparent uniformity China, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and India, among others, show different approaches to the regulation of personal data, with regard to the obligations of organizations or the rights of data subjects. This talk will explore the driving forces behind new developments in the region, the impact of legal fragmentation, and the changing views on key concepts such as consent, legitimate interests, regulation of data flows, data portability, or data breach notification, among others.
