It's hard to exaggerate the change that the COVID-19 pandemic has brought to our world. But even in the midst of the turmoil, many lawyers are reassessing their careers, considering their options, and making changes.
There are a host of ethical issues to consider when lawyers are in transition. Can you take clients with you when you leave a firm? Speaking of clients, whose property are they? What are the consequences of taking clients with you when you leave a firm? If you take clients with you to a new firm will you bring conflicts? And if you don't take the clients, are there no longer conflicts? How much can you tell future employers about your current book of business? What are the rules when you move between government work and private practice? What if you want to do contract work for a number of firms? What are the ethics issues underlying the use of contract lawyers? Now that we're all working remotely, do lawyers have to be licensed where they live? The list goes on.
A panel of ethics experts will address these issues and more, discussing ABA Model Rules 1.1, 1.3, 1.4, 1.7, 1.9, 1.10, 1.11, 1.16 and a selection of advisory opinions, using a series of interactive hypotheticals designed to get you thinking. Trisha Rich, Deputy Professional Responsibility Partner for Holland & Knight's Chicago office and Emil J. Ali Partner at McCabe & Ali, LLP who each represent lawyers and other professionals across many regulated industries, along with Jenny Mittelman, Deputy General Counsel for the State Bar of Georgia, will be your guides.
