This program will look at the case studies of King County, Washington, and Montgomery County, Maryland, with their work on racial equity and social justice. King County was one of the first counties in the country to implement equity, social and racial justice as a part of local government more than a decade ago, and has been improving its efforts since. On a more recent level, in 2019, Montgomery County adopted a Racial Equity and Social Justice Act, creating structural municipal changes to advance equity measures across the County. This program will discuss development, implementation, impacts, and the future of racial equity municipal legislation.
