During this 2.5-hour program, you will gain knowledge about domestic violence situations and cases. Seasoned panelists will focus on these topics:
1-hour (including 15 minutes for questions)
���Military Domestic Violence and Co-occurring Situations: During this session, you will learn about the contexts in which domestic violence takes place to include coercive control and resistance, along with the intersection of co-occurring conditions, such as substance abuse, post-traumatic stress disorder, and traumatic brain injury. The presentation will also address domestic violence problems in the military and the military's response with a focus on military and civilian protection orders. Lastly, this will introduce the VA's domestic violence assistance program and the military discharge upgrade process.

���Representing Domestic Violence Victims: Particularly in the military legal assistance platform, this section will provide a deep examination of representing domestic violence victims. This will include screening and identifying domestic violence trauma and offender dynamics, drafting and filing an initial ex parte petition, and understanding hearings and domestic violence courts. Presenters will explain the importance of knowing the local civilian law and prosecutors' policies to adequately advise clients, while also providing tips about examining domestic violence victims and witnesses in the courtroom. This session will also address safety issues and a variety of potential consequences to a spouse or family when seeking a protective order or participating in a criminal prosecution, including family law issues, such as parenting plans, child custody and support, and supervised visitation.
