While leading a protest at the launch of Apollo 11, Robert Abernathy famously said: “We may go on from this day to Mars and to Jupiter and even to the heavens beyond, but as long as racism, poverty and hunger and war prevail on the Earth, we as a civilized nation have failed.” This panel examines how we can assure that the nation, indeed humanity, does not fail. It will examine the history of black representation in space; discuss the impact of the civil rights movement on national and international space law; and offer strategies for lawyers to foster inclusion in commercial contracts as well as the workplace. While this panel will focus on the aerospace industry, all attorneys will benefit from this honest and unfiltered look at humanity’s progress since Apollo and the suggestions provided to make lawyers part of the success, not the failure.
