The three-part opening session of Boot Camp focuses on racial equity and civil rights in the practice of affordable housing community development law. It begins with a discussion of the history of racialized government policies that informed the creation of the modern housing and urban renewal industry and resulted in persistent patterns of segregation and concentration of poverty. David Williams of Harvard University's Opportunity Insights center, and Andrea Ponsor, the CEA of Stewards of Affordable Housing will then engage in a discussion of the policy work and practical activities carried out by each of their organizations as they attempt to address those conditions. The plenary concludes with a nuts and bolts presentation of the key civil rights considerations attorneys can expect to face in the practice of affordable housing and community development law.
