Closed Captioned.
In order to advance in the legal profession, white women and women of color must find common ground through dialogue. This panel will discuss improving conversations about gender, race, and ethnicity, also referred to as intersectionality, so that all women can work together in combating the barriers to advancement in the legal profession. The ABA's Commission on Women in the Profession's This Talk Isn't Cheap: Women of Color and White Women Attorneys Find Common Ground report explores the reasons why women of color have feelings of mistrust toward their white women colleagues, while also addressing the challenges white women experience in attempting to understand the needs of their minority women colleagues. Through this type of dialogue, we are taking the critical steps to creating a more inclusive, just, and equitable society.
Moderator: Michele Coleman Mayes (Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary at The New York Public Library)
Panelists: Arlena Barnes (Former Bonneville Power Administration's Lead Negotiating Attorney for hydropower coordination agreements), Maureen Mulligan (Chair, Commission on Women in the Profession), Aracely Muñoz (Director of the Lawyers Network and the Washington, D.C. Office, Center for Reproductive Rights), Wendy Shiba (Retired Executive VP, General Counsel & Secretary of KB Home; Past President of National Asian Pacific American Bar Association)
Learning Objectives:
1. At the conclusion of this webinar, participants will be able to construct conversations to improve relationships between women of color and white women in the workplace.
2. Participants will learn to identify the importance of dialogue between women of color and white women in order to combat barriers to advancement in the legal profession.
