As much as we find battles in the western states, and increasingly in the east, over who gets how much water, there is also intense controversy over what's in the water. Pesticides, endangered species, wind turbines, plastic bottles, sediment, pharmaceuticals, ship ballast, nanoparticles, and morelakes, rivers, and oceans are filled with the desirable and the undesirable. Add to that the effects of climate change, and freshwater and marine ecosystems are under unprecedented pressure and undergoing rapid change. This panel will address several of the leading themes in this regard, such as species issues, transboundary pollution, mariculture, watershed health, the U.N. Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction Treaty, the IPCC's Oceans Report, and related litigation. Participants will gain a foundation of knowledge to effectively analyze threats against both freshwater and marine ecosystems.
