The practice of law is stressful under "normal" circumstances. However, we are currently dealing with changing and uncertain times. Sudden changes in our day-to-day routines cause increased stress levels as our nervous system activates a survival response. While this is normal, it can be uncomfortable and unhealthy. You might feel isolated, overwhelmed with urgent demands on your time and attention, or be juggling multiple personal and professional issues. This can also exacerbate behavioral health concerns such as anxiety, depression, substance use, and addiction issues.

This presentation will help you understand the neurobiology and neurophysiology of stress, why and how stress is contagious, and how to make the stress response "work for you" before it becomes compassion fatigue or burnout. In addition, this presentation will share practical ways to mitigate the physical, emotional, and cognitive damage that can result from chronic stress and lack of self-care through developing grit, resiliency and emotional intelligence using mindfulness tools. We will also review ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct 1.1,1.3,1.4 and 8.4(b) and the responsibilities that attorneys have regarding competence, diligence and communication.
