Leadership is a journey often mistaken for a destination. On this journey, one learns many lessons: how to lead effectively, build new bridges, and establish a vision for the future. This is the foundation of leadership growth.
Lawyers are the gatekeepers of justice--they effect social change, exercise influence around a shared vision, and lead change. In order to address the social justice challenges of our time, lawyers must be equipped to exercise leadership as an indispensable tool. This course will assist you in the development of your core leadership competencies while establishing the key disposition of “new social justice lawyering.”
The ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct states, “As a public citizen, a lawyer should seek improvement of the law, access to the legal system, the administration of justice and the quality of service rendered by the legal profession.”
By the end of this program, you will be able to answer these questions:
•Why do lawyers need to lead?
•What is your leadership role?
You will leave with the task of writing your personal mission and vision, which will guide you to answer the questions why lead and why lead for change.
Faculty member Dr. Artika Tyner will draw upon her scholarly research and professional experience to offer practical guidance that will help you embrace your unique leadership qualities; foster your leadership development; and make a difference in the world. A lawyer herself, Dr. Tyner will share highlights from her first book, The Lawyer as Leader: How to Plant People and Grow Justice and her latest book, The Leader’s Journey (2nd Edition). The books cover topics that are essential for the 21st century lawyer to strive, lead change, and make an impact in a global world.
In addition, Honorable Bukola Oriola will provide strategies for crafting your leadership narrative. A renowned journalist who later become a victim of human trafficking, Hon. Oriola has mastered the skills of leading and has succeeded in becoming an international author and storyteller, national advocate and consultant, and entrepreneur.
Finally, Dr. Vanjelis Ngwa will challenge you to cultivate your limitless power and coach your way to success. He started out by seeking to understand the complex dynamics of an ever-changing global world and the role ‘power’ plays in one’s leadership journey. As a lawyer, how do you properly comprehend and leverage the concept of power to achieve personal and organizational goals? In answering this question, you will learn how to lead effectively and strategically.
