Older adults lose more than $1.6 billion annually to financial exploitation, in New York State alone, according to a 2016 study by the New York State Office of Children and Family Services. The national impact of scams is devastating, and invariably results in losses of human rights and dignity.
This program will explore the various ways elder financial abuse manifests and how attorneys can educate, prevent, and intervene in order to best serve their clients. Learn about the signs, symptoms, and red flags of different types of financial abuse as presenters review the results of the latest elder abuse research and what those findings mean for practitioners. Experts will provide an overview of common scams, and share best practices for helping clients prevent and respond to scams.
Potential civil causes of action will be reviewed. You'll learn about reporting financial abuse to law enforcement and other consumer protection agencies and be briefed on national and international law enforcement efforts to respond to the proliferation of these types of crimes targeting older adults.
