Industrial Animal Agriculture in the Pandemic Spotlight by Courtney G. Lee - Most infectious diseases are zoonotic-meaning that they transfer from nonhuman animals to humans-leading to dire human health risks inherent in the large-scale commodification of nonhuman animals.1 The COVID-19 pandemic in particular originated with the human consumption of animals, and a “wet market” where humans and nonhumans crowded together served as the first “super spreader” of the virus.2 The ensuing pandemic has turned a spotlight onto the dangers of industrial animal agriculture facilities as incubators and disseminators of disease, simultaneously illuminating the nonhuman and human exploitation that has been entrenched in that system for decades.
