The Military Divorce and the Thrift Savings Plan
A divorce can be a complicated situation to begin with, throw in the fact that one of the parties is in the military and additional complexities can emerge. One of those additional complexities often times centers around the distribution of the military member’s Thrift Savings Plan (TSP). Given the pending changes to the military’s retirement system (i.e. the shift to the blended retirement system, effective January 1, 2018), the issue of distributing a military member’s TSP is likely to become an even more important and frequently occurring issue.
