CHAIR'S WELCOME by Stephen s. wu

As 2010-2011 Chair of the Section, I welcome you to another bar year and seek your assistance and input in helping the Section and its members flourish this year and into the future. As Section members continue to recover from unprecedented economic challenges, the Section is committed to delivering more value, such as free quarterly SciTech book chapters and free continuing education programs. We will deliver education faster, including two free teleconferences in February and June of 2011. The Section will also provide tangible opportunities and ideas for business and career development, especially for solo practitioners and small firm lawyers. Last year's Section Chair Christine Grant implemented forward-looking initiatives in response to economic challenges that prepare our Section for growth and prosperity. The Section will continue to prepare our members, the bar, and the public for sweeping changes in science and technology we have experienced and will see in the future.

Due to tough economic times, career management and business development are top concerns for today's lawyers.  Right now, the most important job for a law firm lawyer is to ensure that a critical mass of clients is coming in the door to support the firm's business.  Also, for many lawyers, especially recent law school graduates, the top priority is to find a job.

The Section recognizes this reality. And in response, the Section is pleased to publish a pamphlet this January to highlight substantive practical tips, organized by practice area, to help members develop expertise, find a job and develop more business. Click here to access an excerpt, which is geared toward biotechnology law and authored by the Section's Biotechnology Law Committee leadership.

Section committees provide members with direct access to customized information, such as biotechnology law, electronic discovery and digital evidence or healthcare technology, to promote your career, develop resources to grow your business, or otherwise advance professionally. Over the years, I have made many professional contacts at the committee level that led to business opportunities. Section substantive committees also keep me informed of dramatic changes in science and technology law, so I am able to identify issues earlier and deliver better client service. I encourage you to maximize the value of your membership by joining a Section of Science & Technology Law committee today.

The Section also delivers value through educational opportunities. CLE materials are accessible to all Section members from the program 2010 ABA Annual Meeting CLE programs. SciTech will present The Draft EU Guidelines on Standard Setting on October 13th. Registration is free for Section members. I encourage you to register for the A Brave New World The Impact of Electronic Health Records and Exchanges on Industry Standards teleconference on October 12th at the discounted Section member rate. The ABA Section of Science & Technology Law was delighted to co-sponsor Smart Soloing School on September 28-30th, which allowed Section members to register at a discounted rate.

The Section will continue to deliver more member value, but seeks your input and suggestions, so we may better meet your needs. Please share your ideas with Section staff member Julia Passamani at Julia.Passamani@americanbar.org. I will review your ideas to make your Section even better. I look forward to serving you as Section Chair this year.
