Updates – LPM Fall Meeting, ABA Women Rainmakers Mid-Career Workshop, LPM Law Firm Marketing Strategies Conference

If you were unable to attend the LPM Fall Meeting or ABA Women Rainmakers Mid-Career Workshop in Puerto Rico this past October, please be sure to join us for the LPM Midyear Meeting in Los Angeles on February 7-9, 2008. Much business was accomplished during the committee meetings at the LPM Fall Meeting. Section Council met at a new time during the Friday lunch. The Core Groups met during lunch on Saturday in an outside venue, El Arsenal de la Puntilla in Old San Juan, a beautiful setting overlooking the water. Over 75 LPM Section members participated in lively breakout discussions on topics concerning marketing, management, technology and finance. Afterwards, attendees and guests were able to enjoy several hours exploring the old city.

The meeting ended with a bang as the LPM Section welcomed over 100 attendees of the ABA Women Rainmakers Mid-Career Workshop during the Dessert Reception sponsored by Greenberg Traurig LLP. The ABA Women Rainmakers Workshop went off without a hitch over the next day and a half and attendees enjoyed breakout sessions and keynote speakers, one-on-one career coaching and videotaped speaker training sessions, simulated gambling on Casino Night for prizes and plenty of interaction with other attendees and speakers and networking opportunities. The conference was such a success that planning is already underway for the next one.

The ABA LPM Law Firm Marketing Strategies Conference also experienced great success in Washington, D.C. last week. More than 100 attendees participated in this first-of-its-kind conference. The day-and-a-half program offered several marketing ideas and strategies, opportunities for the audience to question the speakers, and networking opportunities during the Diversity Reception. Thanks to Greenfield Belser Ltd. for its participation as a conference supporter. The next ABA LPM Law Firm Marketing Strategies Conference is being planned for 2009.

Audio recordings were made from sessions at this year's ABA LPM Law Firm Marketing Strategies Conference and will available for purchase later this year. An official announcement with the date of release will be provided after Thanksgiving.

LPM Forums Online

A new resource tool has recently been launched offering LPM members a chance to post a question or respond to a question via web discussion board. LPM Forums can be found via a link on the LPM Section homepage at in the left-hand navigation bar. Participants are able to read threads of discussions posted by others concerning an array of topics that fall under one of the four core groups – marketing, management, technology and finance. If you have a question that you need answered or you want to share your knowledge on a particular subject, you may do so by accessing the LPM Forums web discussion board.

A lawyer's research involves much more than just legal research. There's more background information and news on individuals and companies available for free or low-cost on the Internet than has ever been available before.  Like a detective, lawyers need FACTS and they need to find them fast. Unfortunately, most lawyers aren't taught how to conduct this kind of factual research in law school.  The Internet offers an easy way to get FACTS and to get up-to-speed quickly about topics we may otherwise know nothing about.  Carole Levitt and Mark Rosch, authors of the ABA's The Lawyer's Guide to Fact Finding on the Internet, will show you how to be your own CyberDetective and unearth factual information free on the Net.

Attendees will learn:

  • How to locate background information and other publicly available information about people and companies
  • How to find public records-from real property records to criminal records
  • How to keep a step ahead of clients or the opposition by setting up free alerts
  • Tips and tricks for effective searching
