TECHSHOW Training Institute

 The ABA TECHSHOW Board, in response to requests from past ABA TECHSHOW attendees, has added the TECHSHOW Training Institute (TTI) to an already impressive list of educational offerings. TTI will offer (at no additional charge) 90-minute in-depth training sessions presented by popular technology vendors and software experts. TTI will give attendees an opportunity to put to use many of the software programs featured during the educational sessions of the show. The Techshow Training Institute will be held on Saturday, March 27, 2004.

Presenters include Amicus Attorney, Billing Matters, CaseSoft, LexisNexis, Summation, and Time Matters. Let highly qualified trainers and ABA TECHSHOW faculty start you on the path toward effective use of the most current software tools. Section Briefs
Resources for Young Lawyers
 As part of its continuing efforts to reach out to young lawyers, LPM has built an online resource center featuring books, magazine articles, CLE, and other information and opportunities that are of particular interest to young lawyers. LPM is also resuming its Leadership Mentoring Program to attract and mentor future leaders of the Section. The ABA Young Lawyers Division is helping promote the program to its members. The "Leadership Appointee" will have the opportunity to serve on Section Committees. Please visit to check out the resource center, and please encourage talented young lawyers who are eager to serve in the ABA and develop their leadership skills to download an application from the site.

LPM Magazine to Change its Name
Look for changes ahead in the Section’s magazine. With the January/February 2004 issue, Law Practice Management will become, simply, Law Practice magazine. The change was made to express yet another evolution in lawyers’ relationship to the concept of management. In today’s world, if you are practicing law, you are managing a business. Although the name has changed, the magazine has not-–you can still expect the same great articles, columns, and features from the best and brightest in the business. Look for your copy of Law Practice in the new year.
In The Spotlight

Congratulations to LPM Publishing Board Chair Greg Siskind who was featured on the COVER of this month’s ABA Journal! Greg was highlighted as a “risk taker with vision” who seized an opportunity and whose practice is thriving because of it. LPM member Erik Heels was featured in this article as well, along with a full-page picture. Immediate Past Section Chair John Tredennick was also included this month in the ABA Journal in “Ideas From The Front.” John was recognized as a longtime advocate of using high-tech trial preparation techniques. Congratulations to these three gentlemen for their vision, their accomplishments, and their success.

5 Things is a Great Thing
Have you noticed the 5 Things feature in Law Practice Management magazine? This monthly item provides you with what you need to know to get and keep new business.

  • Be certain every speech, seminar and pitch for business has a clear, concise message.
  • Kick up your energy before you start. Remember that motion drives emotion, which drives attention, which drives memory and learning.
  • Anticipate answers to tough, sensitive questions. Tell bad news quickly, then focus on the positive.
  • Relax by exhaling several times before beginning your presentation. Do it often throughout the presentation, too.
  • Be sure to rehearse in front of an audience at least two days before the event. You can then adjust materials, visuals and timing if necessary.
