Afghanistan Background

The ABA Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) had a rule of law program in Afghanistan from 2002–2006. ABA ROLI’s Asia division participated in Afghanistan’s rule of law assessment and assisted in distributing key legal documents to justice sector officials in 2002. It also participated in the Afghanistan Transitional Commercial Law Project, in 2002–2003, by enlisting ABA members as pro bono experts. ABA ROLI’s work in Afghanistan was funded, in part, by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs.
