WASHINGTON, Nov. 13, 2023 – The American Bar Association appreciates that the U.S. Supreme Court has adopted its first Code of Conduct today. The code is a positive first step toward ethics transparency by the nation’s highest court.
In February of this year, the ABA House of Delegates adopted a resolution urging the Supreme Court to adopt a binding code of judicial ethics that would be comparable to the Code of Conduct for United States Judges adopted by the Judicial Conference of the United States.
Today, the Supreme Court announced its policy is “substantially derived from the Code of Conduct for U.S. Judges,” a step that will help to promote public confidence in the court.
While today’s code does not address the important issue of enforcement, the ABA appreciates that Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Jr. has directed a study of best practices for complying with the code.
