Professional Responsibility: Focusing on Military and Veteran Clients [CC]
Focusing on professional responsibilities, particularly for attorneys representing servicemember and veteran clients, this engaging presentation will provide three one-hour sessions: (1) common legal ethics issues, (2) ethical considerations when helping domestic violence victims, and (3) attorneys' ethical obligations regarding technology. This program is designed for military attorneys working in legal assistance, as well as civilian lawyers whose practices involve servicemember or veteran clients or issues.

During this 3-hour program, seasoned panelists will focus on these topics:
- Common Legal Ethics Issues: This session will focus on common legal ethics issues that arise when serving military servicemember and veteran clients. Through the use of hypotheticals and real world examples, participants will examine how the ABA Model Rules and a lawyer's duties of care, confidentiality and loyalty help resolve common ethical dilemmas. Topics covered will include competency issues, conflicts, proper scope of practice, ethics in advocacy and more. (1 hour, including 10 minutes for questions)
- 10-minute break
- Ethical Considerations when Helping Domestic Violence Victims: This segment will discuss the importance of client conflict checks when helping victims of domestic violence, particularly in the military community. This will focus on what makes a conflict, special considerations for current and past clients, and how to determine whether a conflict exists. This will also address the next steps after determining that there is a conflict, along with the importance of having a conflict plan in place. This will also highlight other ethical considerations when helping a victim, such as the duty of confidentiality. (1 hour, including 10 minutes for questions)
- 10-minute break
- Legal Ethics and Technology: This segment will provide an overview of attorneys' ethical obligations regarding technology. The presenters will review the relevant ABA Model Rules as well as two ABA Formal Opinions to discuss ethical obligations in a practical context. The panelists will also provide a variety of thought questions and hypothetical situations to provide guidance relevant to specific scenarios that a military legal assistance attorneys may face in their daily practice. (1 hour, including 10 minutes for questions)
