Sports Law: Working for a 5x Super Bowl Champion and Power-Five Conference of the NCAA

The Career Choice Series is designed to help you choose your career path. Whether you’re a law student, young lawyer, or transitioning attorney, find out what it’s like to work in various practice areas and the best way to position yourself to get there.

In this segment, our speakers will share their paths as sports law attorneys. Sports Law encompasses a variety of legal issues that affect the sports industry whether it be in the professional, Olympic, collegiate, amateur, or youth settings. Sports law touches upon almost every legal practice area including contracts, licensing, labor and employment, criminal, media, antitrust, personal injury, and intellectual property. Lawyers who work in sports can represent athletes, work in-house for a specific team, league, players association, brand or agency, or they can work as outside counsel representing any of the aforementioned entities.

This panel of sports law attorneys works in-house.

Grecia Barboza is Associate Counsel at the San Francisco 49ers, a professional football team in the NFL that has won 5 Super Bowl titles. Grecia advises the organization on legal issues involving the football team and Levi's Stadium.

Joth Bhullar serves as Counsel, Legal & Business Affairs at the Pac-12 Networks, the cable and television network owned by the Pac-12 Conference, a collegiate athletic conference which has 24 sports participating in the NCAA at the Division I level. Joth drafts and negotiates contracts, including conference-wide sponsorship agreements, media distribution, and general vendor agreements.

Our speakers will share with you their career paths, provide invaluable insight into what skills you’ll need to break into this area, what drew them to it, the pros and cons of working in the sports industry, and what a typical day entails.

Moderator: Leonard Lun, Director of Employer Relations & Adjunct Professor of Law, Office of Career Management, Santa Clara University School of Law, Santa Clara, CA
