Turkey Background

Despite Turkish government efforts to address domestic violence through legislation, it persists in Turkish society. Studies indicate that a high percentage of women in both urban and rural areas continue to suffer from physical abuse, often on a continuing basis, due to lack of awareness of legal rights by victims, ingrained societal attitudes about domestic violence, and insufficient support services. Since March 2011, the Middle East North Africa and the Europe and Eurasia Divisions of ABA ROLI have jointly been implementing an integrated set of professional capacity building and public awareness activities to reduce the prevalence of violence against women in Turkey with Bahçeşehir University and a network of Turkish civil society organizations.
