Enhancing Judicial-Media Relations in Algeria

June 2009

In collaboration with the Algerian judicial training institute (Supérieure de la Magistrature or ESM), the ABA supported the organization of series workshop for prosecutors, student judges, and sitting judges aimed at promoting judicial-media relations and improving public outreach in Algeria. ABA-expert Ms. Amanda Todd, a Public Information Officer for the Supreme Court of Wisconsin and a former journalist, led the series of workshops.

The workshop series began with a two and a half-day session with 15 prosecutors. Following the session with prosecutors, Ms. Todd conducted shortened versions of the workshop with 300 third-year student judges and 20 sitting judges. Participating student judges conducted mock interviews. Sitting judges discussed the current relationship between the judiciary and the media and possible initiatives to improve the relationship and public outreach in general.
