After winning Ukraine’s 2009 national client counseling competition, Maryna Vinner and Kateryna Yevdokymova, law students from the Khmel’nyts’ky University of Management and Law, represented Ukraine in the Louis M. Brown International Client Counseling Competition this year. The team competed in the April 7–10 competition, which was held at the University of Hong Kong, Pokfulam.
Vinner said the competition has enabled them to make friends from around the world and from varying legal traditions, improving their legal knowledge and their English language mastery. The jury commended the Ukrainian participants for their high-level preparation and demonstrated team work, as well as their skills in establishing a relationship with their client.
Sponsored by the ABA Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI), Ukraine’s national client counseling competition was launched in 2006, hosted by partner legal clinic Ostroh Academy. Today, the national competition is held annually in Kyiv, with the first and second—local and regional—rounds of the competition hosted by law schools across the country. The national client counseling organizing committee, which ABA ROLI established in 2009 to ensure the competition’s sustainability, raised funds from local organizations and law firms to send this year’s team to the international competition. Teams from 22 countries took part in this year’s annual international competition.
