Supporting Ukrainian Law Students in International Legal Competitions

05.04.2007

On April 10-13, a national team from Ukraine participated for the second year in the Louis M. Brown International Client Counseling Competition held in Sydney, Australia. Ukraine was represented by students from Donetsk National University Legal Clinic, which was the winning team of the national round of the competition in February this year. The Rule of Law Initiative provides financial support and assistance to plan and implement the Ukraine national competition each year through its clinical education program and plans to expand this practical skills opportunity at a broader national and regional level in coming years. Rule of Law Initiative-Ukraine’s Clinical Education Program Coordinator, Maryana Kulya, also attended the International Competition in Sydney to develop ideas to improve and expand this practical legal education program in Ukraine.

A national team from Ukraine also participated in the Phillip C. Jessup International Moot Court Competition held in Washington, D.C. this past March 25-31. Ukraine was represented by students from the Kyiv-Mohyla Law University, after winning the national round of the competition earlier this year. Although the Ukraine program does not financially support this Moot Court Competition, the winning team was coached privately by Rule of Law Initiative-Ukraine’s Senior Program Manager, Vasili Kukharchyk, who accompanied the team to the international competition in D.C.  Other Ukraine staff members and experts provided assistance and support to the two winning Ukrainian teams during practice rounds prior to each of the international competitions.   As a result, the Ukrainian Moot Court Team achieved the rank of 9th out of 90 teams from 75 countries world-wide at the International Competition.
