Ukraine Background

Our work in Ukraine has involved a broad-range of legal reform, anti-corruption and legal education activities. We assist legal aid clinics; support advocacy centers, which provide public outreach and legal consultations to disadvantaged populations; train defense attorneys; and provide technical assistance in drafting and revising legislation.

We support efforts to combat corruption, cyber crime and human trafficking and efforts to reform the law enforcement system. We also support initiatives that address issues of xenophobia, racism and ethnic discrimination. While the ABA Rule of Law Initiative has been operating country-specific programs in Ukraine since 1992, the Kyiv office has also been home to the Newly Independent States Regional Institution Building Advisor program (1999–2005) and the Regional Anti-Corruption Advisor program (1999–2006).
