Judges’ Association of Serbia Officially Joins Association of European Judges

December 2008

After several years as a candidate association, the Judges’ Association of Serbia (JAS), a partner organization of the American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) in Serbia, was proud to officially join Magistrates Europeans pour la Democratie Et les Libertes (MEDEL).  MEDEL is the umbrella organization of national judges associations from across Europe. As part of its ongoing commitment to support judicial excellence, ABA ROLI sponsored members of the JAS managing board to attend their first MEDEL conference, which took place in Paris on November 28 and 29.

JAS President Judge Boljevic and JAS Vice President Judge Omer Hadzimerovic attended the event, with the aim of solidifying their alliance with judges across Europe. This was an especially critical point to underscore these relationships, as the Serbian judicial system is in the midst of change due to new laws that affect the judiciary. The conference was also a wonderful opportunity to promote JAS, to exchange information and opinions with European judicial experts, and to officially welcome the professional support of MEDEL.

ABA ROLI has worked with JAS for more than 10 years, helping the organization to distinguish itself as one of the most significant legal reform organizations in Serbia.
