Considering Stronger Sanctions for Corruption in Romania

November 2007

The ABA Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) will hold a judicial seminar on the topic of high level corruption crimes in Romania. The seminar, held on November 19, 2007, will be moderated by a Romanian judge and outside experts and will focus on current sentencing practices and a lack of strong sanctions against corruption.

A June 2007 European Commission Country Report raised these criticisms about Romania’s judicial response to high level corruption. Judges in the country will have the opportunity at the seminar to discuss these criticisms and come to consensus on ways to stem high level corruption through judicial sanctions. Participants will include judges from the Bucharest Tribunal, Court of Appeal and High Court of Cassation and Justice.

ABA ROLI will organize this seminar in collaboration with the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, with support from the French Embassy in Bucharest and funding from The Stability Pact Anti-Corruption Initiative (SPAI).
