Street Law Comes to Comrat

March 2009

In October 2008, Moldovan law students from the ABA Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI)-sponsored Comrat University Legal Clinic gave a street law presentation to approximately 20 high school students. The teens learned about their legal rights when dealing with law enforcement officials. The street law program, implemented by ABA ROLI with the support of the U.S. Agency for International Development, is aimed at providing public legal training on legal, human rights and democratic principles.

ABA ROLI is training a group of Chisinau law students to teach local high school students about consumer rights. The students will be advised of their rights and learn what to do if they encounter fraud, misrepresentation or any deceit in connection with purchasing goods in Moldova. ABA ROLI will train the law students and critique their presentations. ABA ROLI will also distribute consumer rights brochures to high school students and their teachers during the street law sessions. Starting Spring 2009, the law students will reach four-to-six high schools a semester.

Since 2006, law students from ABA ROLI-sponsored law clinics in Cahul, Tiraspol and Comrat have taught more than 900young Moldovans through street law sessions. The trainings teach the youth about their legal rights and how to exercise and protect those rights.
