New Live-Client Clinic to Open in Kosovo
09.07.2007
On August 31, 2007 a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the U.S. Office in Pristina, the ABA Rule of Law Initiative, and the University of Pristina Law Faculty to introduce the first live-client clinic into the law school curriculum.
The introduction of this clinic represents a continuation of ABA ROLI’s ongoing work with the law faculty to develop courses that provide students with the practical skills they will need to succeed in the legal profession. The Initiative has developed two simulation/extern clinics as well as a legal methodology course with the law faculty. This new agreement will enable the development of a trial advocacy course which will lead into a live client clinic.
This Memorandum of Understanding represents the next step in course development where the students will be working with actual clients on real cases. Instruction will include both classroom discussion and field work. By working on actual cases under close supervision, student participants in the clinical program will learn legal analysis and interpretation; develop legal writing skills; learn how to interview clients; learn how to negotiate and mediate on their behalf where appropriate; learn how to develop a case; and how to incorporate ethical practices into their activities.
