Kazakhstan Background

The American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) opened its first Kazakhstan office in 1993 and has since worked with lawyers, law students, judges and citizens across the country. Kazakhstan has undertaken a number of legal reforms and focused its efforts on developing a strong, professional judiciary that is fair and consistently delivers justice. As part of these reforms, Kazakhstan has worked to bring its criminal legislation and national laws in line with international standards. In cooperation with local stakeholders, ABA ROLI provides technical assistance through a variety of training activities, professional exchanges and resource development initiatives to improve the capacity of judges and enhance the efficiency and accessibility of the judicial system.
