The American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) has worked to advance the rule of law in Armenia since 1996. Some of its chief achievements include helping to establish critical local legal institutions, including Armenia’s first unified bar association, first legal aid clinics, and the region’s first Public Defender’s Office. ABA ROLI has also supported a number of advances in legal education reform, judicial reform, and criminal law reform, with all efforts focused on building the capacity of local institutions to promote justice and economic opportunity through the rule of law. Through 2016-2018, ABA ROLI provided entrepreneurship and tax-related training and legal assistance for the recent influx of refugees and asylees who have settled in Armenia since the start of the Syrian civil war. ABA ROLI is currently working with the Office of the Human Rights Defender of Armenia through a project funded by the United States Agency for International Development to strengthen its institutional capacity in target areas and its communication and links with the human rights community and public.
