Papua New Guinea Background

The ABA Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) launched its Papua New Guinea program in October 2011, with funding from the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor. The program aimed to combat violence—including violence against women—and human-rights abuses associated with extractive industries. ABA ROLI and its local partners worked to: (1) increase legal awareness and access to quality legal services among Papua New Guineans in resource-rich areas; and (2) build the capacity of the judiciary and government officials to strengthen and enforce human rights laws and policies.
