Indonesia - Rule of Law Program

Access to Justice and Human Rights

The ABA Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) is working with local partner organizations, including the Jakarta Legal Aid Institute (also known as LBH Jakarta) and the Asian Forum for Human Rights and Development to increase the capacity of civil society groups throughout the ASEAN to advocate for a strong and comprehensive human rights system. To accomplish this goal, ABA ROLI is convening a technical working group of Indonesian stakeholders and a regional forum that will connect lawyers and civil society groups. In addition, it is developing an online information-sharing platform to facilitate communication and coordination among lawyers and civil society human rights advocates throughout the region, to establish common understanding of regional human rights systems and to strengthen advocacy networks. ABA ROLI will also help LBH Jakarta create a training-of-trainers module on effective collaboration between lawyers and civil society within regional human rights systems. Indonesian lawyers will then be trained to lead trainings throughout the region, building the capacity of and strengthening ties with their Southeast Asian counterparts. The trainings are meant to help networks of participating organizations design and implement advocacy strategies to strengthen the ASEAN human rights system.
