2016 Rule of Law Luncheon

The Rule of Law at Home and Abroad

Video: Keynote address

Speaker: Justice Mariano-Florentino Cuéllar of the Supreme Court of California

Moderator: Judge M. Margaret McKeown, U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit and Chair, ABA ROLI

The rule of law challenges we face today no longer fit in neat jurisdictional boxes.  Whether it’s environmental degradation, health pandemics, or terrorism, cyber-crime, food contamination, or trafficking, contemporary problems spill over borders and require creative new international tools and solutions.  Justice Mariano-Florentino Cuellar joined Judge Margaret McKeown in a free-ranging discussion of needed responses to these transnational problems and the role of the judiciary and of the bar, including initiatives such as ABA ROLI.

Celebrating Pro Bono Champions

ABA ROLI recognized the extraordinary contributions of two  volunteers:

Tom Lindley of Perkins Coie, for his extensive pro bono work in addressing China’s critical environmental problems and their threat to citizens’ basic health and safety.

Rebecca Fisher and the Minnesota Bar Association, for their pro bono support of the Kosovo Bar Association, spawning an enriching sister bar relationship between the Minnesota and Kosovo bars that we expect to pay rule of law dividends for years.
