Video: Techniques for Participatory Transitional Justice Discussed

June 2014

On June 18, the ABA Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) hosted a panel discussion on the role that affected communities can play in designing transitional justice strategies that effectively promote accountability, reconciliation and peace. Lena Slachmuijlder of Search for Common Ground (SFCG), Dr. Patrick Vinck of the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative and Jim Wormington of ABA ROLI discussed the advantages and challenges of ensuring such community participation within transitional justice policymaking.

Following opening remarks by Andrew Solomon, transitional justice advisor at the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), panelists discussed several mechanisms, including participatory research, large-scale population-based surveys, and media and the arts. During the event, ABA ROLI shared a recently published USAID-funded technical guide, Community Participation in Transitional Justice: A Role for Participatory Research, which provides a detailed methodology for using participatory research to nurture community-driven approaches to transitional justice.
