The Welcome Legal Alliance is a Welcome.US initiative to mobilize the nation's lawyers to ensure that Afghans have access to critical legal services throughout the entire resettlement process. It will amplify the work of -- and drive resources to -- the front-line non-profit organizations and others who are already providing a range of legal services to our Afghan allies and new neighbors. Lawyers across the country, working in-house and at law firms big and small, have already been stepping up and increasing their pro bona work to support immigration, refugee, and asylum cases. The purpose of the Welcome Legal Alliance is to enhance, grow, and leverage these efforts to make sure no one is left behind.
To launch this effort, the Welcome Legal Alliance is:
- Recruiting lawyers, law firms and legal teams who may not yet participate in pro bona immigration work to do so, and asking them to pledge pro bona resources to on-the-ground organizations facilitating legal services.
- Increasing the pro bona and in-kind immigration work lawyers, law firms, and legal teams are already undertaking.
- Sourcing Dari and Pashto speaking lawyers, paralegals, and legal assistants to help provide translation services.
- Coordinating a working group to triage legal needs as they arise, to ensure availability of pro bona legal services particularly in underserved locations.
The Welcome Legal Alliance is co-led by the Afghan-American Foundation, Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP, Human Rights First, and Welcome.US. Members include the ABA, AILA, /RAP, KIND, Pars Equality Center, Tahirih Justice Center, and We the Action.
