    Young Lawyers Lead Hurricane Recovery: ABA YLD Mobilizes for Disaster Relief

    As those hit hardest by recent hurricanes are trying to put their lives back together, the Young Lawyers Division is sending members of the Disaster Legal Services group to help navigate the legal decisions ahead.

    Advocate of the Month

    We are proud to honor the ABA Young Lawyers Division (YLD) Disaster Legal Services (DLS) team as our Advocates of the Month for October 2024. Under the leadership of Amanda Brown, DLS has dedicated countless hours to supporting communities affected by disasters, recently securing a $40,000 grant increase from FEMA to aid in hurricane Helene relief efforts. The DLS team is also coordinating volunteer outreach in North Carolina, enabling members to provide pro bono legal services and conduct community outreach and intake. Special recognition goes to YLD Chair Dani Borel, who helped clear the way for volunteer travel and lodging, ensuring that this vital support reaches those who need it most. We commend the entire DLS team for their unwavering commitment to disaster relief and legal advocacy.

    Legislative Research Tip

    Researchers can now view a Member’s sponsored and co-sponsored bills on Congress.gov’s updated member profile pages. From the Congress.gov homepage, select Members at top right, and select a name to get to the profile page for a particular Member. Search for sponsored bills by the Member using filters including subject (finance, national security, etc.), committee, and session of Congress. From the same profile page, link to remarks in the Congressional Record for that Member under “Member Activity” on the left side. Finally, get email alerts regarding the Member’s sponsored legislation by selecting the “Get alerts” link at top left of the profile page.

    The ABA Washington Letter is a monthly publication produced by the Governmental Affairs Office to report and analyze congressional and executive branch action on legislative issues of interest to the ABA and the legal profession. The newsletter highlights ABA involvement in the federal legislative process and focuses on the association's legislative and governmental priorities and other issues on which the ABA has policy.
