    Advocate of the Month

    We are pleased to honor Steven Caltrider as our Advocate of the Month for October 2023 for serving as the Chair of the ABA IP Law Section. Mr. Caltrider is Vice President and Chief IP Counsel of the Dana Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI) and retired Vice President and General Patent Counsel for Eli Lilly and Company. His passion is creating and enforcing IP to enable life-saving innovation to reach patients. He has extensive litigation experience in the leading intellectual property forums (more than 30 countries), including federal district courts and the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the Federal Circuit; courts in Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, and the Netherlands; as well as the USPTO, EPO, and JPO. Mr. Caltrider is also experienced in managing global teams of attorneys and staff on a wide range of IP matters, from patent procurement to technology acquisitions and data security. In addition to his service to the ABA IPL Section, Mr. Caltrider is the immediate past chair and a current member of the Patent Public Advisory Committee of the USPTO. Mr. Caltrider received a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Purdue University and a law degree, summa cum laude, from the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law.

    Legislative Research Tip

    Member Remarks in the Congressional Record Users can now locate congressional member remarks on Congress.gov for Congressional Record issues from 1995 to the present. On the Congress.gov homepage, select a name from the Members page; then scroll down to “Member Remarks” on the left hand side. Input a particular topic, eg. "Southern border" in the search field at top, and check the “search within” box. Results for member remarks on this topic will then display, and can be sorted in chronological order or narrowed to a congress session. Alternative method: From the Congressional Record search page, scroll down to “Member Remarks” on the left side, select a member from the drop-down list, and follow the same search process as above for member remarks.

    About the Washington Letter

    The ABA Washington Letter is a monthly publication produced by the Governmental Affairs Office to report and analyze congressional and executive branch action on legislative issues of interest to the ABA and the legal profession. The newsletter highlights ABA involvement in the federal legislative process and focuses on the association's legislative and governmental priorities and other issues on which the ABA has policy.
