    Advocate of the Month

    We are proud to honor Michael Santos as our Advocate of the Month for November 2024. As Chair of the ABA Commission on Homelessness and Poverty, Michael led efforts to draft and pass a policy resolution advocating for a federal renter tax credit, which the ABA adopted in 2023. He continues to advance housing and tax policies to prevent homelessness and provide relief to low-income households. A former eviction defense litigator, Michael has dedicated his career to protecting vulnerable communities. He is now leading the Commission’s response to the criminalization of homelessness following the Grants Pass v. Johnson decision. Michael’s work exemplifies the advocacy and leadership we celebrate in the ABA.

    Legislative Research Tip

    The Law Library of Congress offers a large amount of reference material online, and in order to help researchers access it efficiently, librarians have recently started producing tutorial videos to show how to navigate these collections. These “bite-sized” videos are intended to stay under ten minutes, to better fit into users’ schedules. The first two bite-sized video tutorials, on Navigating the Library of Congress Catalog and the Military Legal Resources Collection, are available now, and more are expected to be added in 2024.     About the Washington Letter

    The ABA Washington Letter is a monthly publication produced by the Governmental Affairs Office to report and analyze congressional and executive branch action on legislative issues of interest to the ABA and the legal profession. The newsletter highlights ABA involvement in the federal legislative process and focuses on the association's legislative and governmental priorities and other issues on which the ABA has policy.
