    The ABA Endorses Bipartisan Legislation for Children’s Immigration Docket

    On November 1, 2023, Senators Michael Bennet (D-CO) and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), along with Representatives Dan Goldman (D-NY) and Maria Salazar (R-FL), introduced legislation addressing weaknesses in our immigration system’s treatment of children.

    Advocate of the Month

    We are pleased to honor Tom Susman as our Advocate of the Month for November 2023 for his dedication to the ABA and advocacy on behalf of the legal profession. This month, Tom was awarded the National Institute of Lobbying & Ethics Lifetime Achievement Award. Tom has been a leader and advocate for the American Bar Association (ABA) for over fifteen years. He started as the Associate Executive Director charged with overseeing the ABA’s governmental affairs team, guiding the association’s advocacy efforts at home and abroad, and ensuring its compliance with ethical and legal responsibilities involving our lobbying efforts.

    Legislative Research Tip

    Bill Tracker on Congress.gov The Congress.gov bill tracker displays the status of bills for each step of the legislative process. The bill tracker bar, found on the summary page of each piece of legislation, highlights the current status of the bill such as “Introduced,” “Passed House/Senate”, to the last step “Became Law”. The bill tracker is also available for past legislation, displaying the last completed step for each bill, even if it did not become law. Tabs on the summary page provide additional information for each piece of legislation such as amendments, cosponsors, and related bills.

    About the Washington Letter

    The ABA Washington Letter is a monthly publication produced by the Governmental Affairs Office to report and analyze congressional and executive branch action on legislative issues of interest to the ABA and the legal profession. The newsletter highlights ABA involvement in the federal legislative process and focuses on the association's legislative and governmental priorities and other issues on which the ABA has policy.
