ABA Urges Congress to Investigate Removal of Indigenous Children from their Families

On May 11, ABA President Reggie Turner sent a letter to House Natural Resources Subcommittee for Indigenous Peoples of the United States Chair Teresa Leger Fernandez and Ranking Member Jay Obernolte urging the subcommittee to support H.R. 5444.

ABA Survey Reveals Opinions on Voting and Legal Access

In celebration of Law Day, the ABA unveiled results from the fourth annual ABA Survey of Civic Literacy on April 29 during a live online event. The survey measured the American public’s knowledge of civics.

Advocate of the Month

We're proud to honor Jordan Jones as our Advocate of the Month! Jordan Jones is Director of Legal Affairs and Lead Attorney for the Humanitarian Legal Assistance Project. Amidst the Afghan crisis, she has dedicated her career to advocating for Afghan refugees left behind in Afghanistan and in refugee camps around the world. She left her previous job to provide pro bono legal assistance to help this vulnerable population full-time. Building her organization around her work, she has provided necessary legal training to pro bono attorneys, and has been able to assist hundreds of Afghan refugees seeking shelter and permanent resettlement into the U.S. and elsewhere. She has partnered with the ABA Rule of Law Initiative and Global Programs to build a virtual international legal pro bono clinic to assist Afghan refugees connect to legal counsel within the ABA network around the world. Recently, she embarked on a trip with the ABA to the United Arab Emirates to begin the process in the Emirate Humanitarian City which has housed over 10,000 Afghan refugees since the fall of Kabul. Through her passion, leadership, expertise, and fearlessness, she has been instrumental to the success of this emerging program.

Legislative Research Tip

Legislative and Policy Subjects on Congress.gov Researchers can search for congressional bills using pre-assigned legislative and policy subjects on Congress.gov. From the homepage go to Advanced Search, and under the Legislation tab scroll down to “Subjects”. Select from 32 broad policy areas in an A-Z list of subjects (health, environment, labor, etc.) or an extensive list of over 1,000 legislative subject terms. Then complete the search using the selected terms.
