ABA August Advocacy Month: Impacting Policy in Home Offices

August Recess

August Recess

As Congress takes its annual summer break, legal advocates are gearing up for a critical month of advocacy. This August, the Governmental Affairs Office (GAO) is excited to work with legal professionals across the country to participate in "ABA August Advocacy Month," an initiative designed to organize legal advocates on critical issues shaping our legal landscape.

During the August Congressional Recess, elected officials return to their home districts and states. This provides a prime opportunity for face-to-face engagement with constituents. Similar to our efforts during ABA Day in Washington, the GAO will be working with advocates who plan to meet with their federally elected officials on issues of importance to the legal profession.

While participants may choose to discuss issues especially pertinent to their state, potential focal points for ABA August Advocacy Month include:

  • Supporting initiatives that enhance access to justice and legal services;
  • Promoting policies that uphold the integrity of the legal profession and safeguard constitutional rights; and
  • Advocating for reforms that address systemic inequalities and promote fairness in our legal system.

Your Role in Advocacy

Meeting with members of Congress in their home offices offers the same opportunity as a congressional meeting in Washington without the need to travel to the nation’s capital. Meeting at home also allows for larger delegations and more focused attention.

ABA August Advocacy Month requires the active participation of legal professionals like you. Whether you're a seasoned advocate or new to the process, your voice matters. Here's how you can contribute:

  1. Engage with Elected Officials: Schedule meetings or virtual discussions with your congressional delegation to discuss issues impacting the legal profession and your community.
  2. Utilize ABA Resources: Stay informed with our provided resources, including one-pagers, talking points, and advocacy toolkits tailored to support your efforts.
  3. Share Your Story: Share personal anecdotes and data-driven arguments that illustrate the impact of legislative decisions on your practice and clients.
  4. Mobilize Your Network: Encourage colleagues and peers to join you in advocacy efforts, amplifying our collective voice across the nation.
