    The 118th Congress was sworn in on January 7th and will serve through the end of 2024. This included over 80 new members of Congress, many of whom are lawyers.

    Advocate of the Month

    We are proud to honor Jack Rives as our Advocate of the Month for January 2023 for his steadfast dedication to the American Bar Association. Jack will be leaving the ABA on March 3rd, after selflessly serving as the ABA’s Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer for almost thirteen years, demonstrating exceptionally caring leadership, strategic vision, and unwavering support for the rule of law. Before joining the ABA, Jack had a 33-year career in the United States Air Force as a military attorney, culminating in his promotion to Lieutenant General and service as The Judge Advocate General of the United States Air Force, the senior U.S. Air Force attorney. We wish Jack the best in his future endeavors and cannot thank him enough for his service to the American Bar Association and enduring support for the ABA’s leaders, members, and talented staff.     Legislative Research Tip

    Selected congressional committee hearing transcripts from 2001-present are now available on Congress.gov. On the homepage, select “Committee Materials” from the drop-down menu at top left, and input keywords in search box to locate a particular hearing. If you have the committee name use the “Committees” page to get to a similar listing of activity. On results page, limit search to "Committee Meetings” under the filters at left. Then use the Control-F key to locate mentions of “Transcript” in the results. The hearing page will have a PDF option of the transcript for easier viewing.

    About the Washington Letter

    The ABA Washington Letter is a monthly publication produced by the Governmental Affairs Office to report and analyze congressional and executive branch action on legislative issues of interest to the ABA and the legal profession. The newsletter highlights ABA involvement in the federal legislative process and focuses on the association's legislative and governmental priorities and other issues on which the ABA has policy.
