Legislative Priorities for the 119th Congress: Board Approves ABA's Focus for the Next Two Years

These priorities will guide ABA leadership, the GAO’s team of lobbyists, and our grassroots outreach supporting the association’s advocacy efforts.

On January 31, the ABA Board of Governors approved the association’s legislative and governmental priorities which are now posted on the Governmental Affairs Office (GAO) webpage. These priorities will guide ABA leadership, the GAO’s team of lobbyists, and our grassroots outreach supporting the association’s advocacy efforts during the 119th Congress.

The ABA recognizes the political environment in our government has changed, with the Republicans having majority control of the White House, Senate, and the House of Representatives. With change comes new opportunities, and we will adapt our advocacy efforts and limited resources accordingly to maximize the Association’s effectiveness in advancing our policy interests.

As a result, there are two main changes in our priorities for the 119th Congress from the last Congress. First, we have expanded our priority on cybersecurity to also encompass other emerging technologies of interest on Capitol Hill, including artificial intelligence and data privacy. Second, we have moved preserving our Public Service Loan Forgiveness effort into the access to legal services priority and deleted legal education as a stated priority for the association.

Thank you to the thousands of ABA members who responded to our priorities survey and submitted comments. Your input was an important part of the Board’s consideration in this approval process.

The ABA Governmental Affairs team is already working with the new Congress, renewing existing relationships and building new ones. Now is a great time for ABA members and members of the legal profession to do the same. Visit our Grassroots Action Center [HC1] to access tools focused on helping you get to know the new Congress – bios for the freshman members of the House and Senate, lists of lawyers serving in Congress, tips for contacting your elected officials, and more.

While on the site, join our Grassroots Action Team and let us know about relationships you have with Members of Congress or their staff. Follow us @ABAGrassroots to learn about significant developments as they happen.

Congressional action during the 119th Congress will have long-lasting consequences for access to justice, the justice system, and our nation. We need your help to ensure the collective voice of the American legal profession is heard in Washington D.C.
