    ABA Policy Positions At-A-Glance

    Ahead of the 2024 Election, the GAO has created a series of summary statements covering the policy positions of the American Bar Association. See what the ABA has to say about an issue and the policies to support that position.

    Advocate of the Month

    We are proud to honor our outgoing President, Mary Smith, and our incoming President, William R. “Bill” Bay, as our Advocates of the Month for August 2024. We thank Past-President Smith for her tireless service and dedication to the ABA. Bill Bay is a partner with the St. Louis office of Thompson Coburn LLP and has been a leader within the ABA for many years. He co-chaired the Practice Forward initiative during the COVID-19 pandemic, served as chair of the House of Delegates, and chaired the Section of Litigation. Bay has also led several ABA entities, including the Standing Committee on Bar Activities and Services and the Commission on Racial and Ethnic Diversity in the Profession. He has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Spurgeon Smithson Award and the Distinguished Lawyer Award from the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis. Bay is a highly experienced litigator with over 30 years of experience representing major corporations in complex litigation.

    Researchers can now track House and Senate committee actions and receive alerts through Congress.gov. View the committees directory for a list of committees in congress, and link to individual profiles pages (eg. Senate Appropriations Committee) for a list of Committee Materials such as legislation, meetings, publications and nominations. To set up notifications of activity by a committee, visit the profile page and click “Get Alerts” at top left. Register for a Congress.gov account to sign up for other alerts and updates on bills, treaty documents, member profiles.

    About the Washington Letter

    The ABA Washington Letter is a monthly publication produced by the Governmental Affairs Office to report and analyze congressional and executive branch action on legislative issues of interest to the ABA and the legal profession. The newsletter highlights ABA involvement in the federal legislative process and focuses on the association's legislative and governmental priorities and other issues on which the ABA has policy.
